India: Scientists produce new fruit preservation coating
The Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gums (IINRG) in Namkum has developed a specialized fruit coating formulation that increases shelf life by two weeks, preserves moisture and protects fruits from germs.
Scientists have successfully tested it on kinnow and tests are now being conducted on other fruits, including orange and apple, and vegetables like pointed gourd and brinjal.
S K Pandey, a scientist at IINRG, said after successfully testing the formulation on kinnow last year, experts are now working to develop a similar formulae for other fruits and some vegetables.
Scientists, when asked why separate preparation is needed for different fruits and vegetables, said it depended on the organic constitution of the substance and its physiology.
\"There has to be a different formulation for every fruit. For example, kinnow and orange look almost the same and a common man may not differentiate between the two. But if we use the same formulation for orange as for kinnow, then it will not work. Similarly, we need to have different formulation for fruits like apple, which is consumed without removing the skin. In this case, we also need to get a certificate from the food department to ensure that it is not harmful to the digestive system,\" one of the researchers involved said.

It is bring to your kind notice that in the ICAR and its Institutes, the total sanctioned cadre strength for the post of Junior Accounts Officers (JAOs) are 39 against only 15 JAOs (approx.) are presently available in the system.
Earlier, with the minimum 3 years experience as JAO were eligible for promotion to the post of AFAO. This has been changed to minimum 5 years experience as JAO to fill up the post of AFAO. Several Institutes are working without regular AFAOs and even JAOs. Presently a few number (around 15) of JAOs are available in the ICAR System with more than 3 years of experience.
Therefore, it is requested to kindly give one time relaxation in the Recruitment Rules for filling up of AFAO post among the existing JAOs with the minimum 3 years experience. This results, some of the Institutes will get the regular AFAOs from the available JAOs which will help for the smooth functioning of day to day activities and responsibilities in the Audit and Accounts Section of the Institutes.

A certain quality of shellac is approved for our consumption. However we are not aware of its accurate chemical ingredients for which we request you to run appropriate tests the result of which will help us procure the same quality shellac from different manufacturers.
Please note that we are procuring shellac from different manufacturers which are physically similar in appearance but chemically do not meet our requirement
For this purpose , we would like to chemically identify our shellac so that there is no problem in procuring the required quality of shellac from different manufacturers.
Please advise us the tests that are required for this purpose & also the cost of tests so that we can forward the samples & payments to you accordingly.
